  • Is Brooklyn Clay industries open for in person classes? How safe is it?

    Brooklyn Clay industries Studio is open and holding classes at a reduced capacity.. We follow strict COVID 19 protocols and guidelines as directed by the CDC, NY state and city. Students, and staff will be required to wear masks at all times even if alone in the studio. 

    Everyone is required to wash their hands with soap and water before entering the studio. Equipment is also spaced so social distancing can be practiced.

    In the event CDC guidelines change during the course of a class session or workshop and a state wide shutdown occurs, BCi will transition to online instruction for hand- building classes only.

  • What if there’s another lock down?

    Credits for future classes is possible if less than half of the session has been completed, but there will be no refunds. Please make sure you only register if you are comfortable with this policy.

    All classes and open studio hours are subject to change or cancellation.

  • Exactly Where is Brooklyn Clay industries Ceramic Studio located?

    We’re located at the historic Brooklyn Navy Yard, nestled between South Williamsburg, Fort Green, and DUMBO. 

    Our official mailing address at the BNY is 63 Flushing Ave, Building 62 Suite 306 Brooklyn, NY 11205, which brings you to an address at the Brooklyn Navy Yard on Flushing Ave. However it’s close to the Flushing/ Cumberland Ave entrance gate. (Closed during COVID-19 pandemic)  

    We’re within the Brooklyn Navy Yard at 62 5th Street between Market St. and Morris Avenues.  

  • What is Brooklyn Clay Industries?

    Brooklyn Clay is an almost 4000 sq. foot, fully equipped pottery/ceramic facility. Go to our home page for more information.

  • Do I need experience to join the studio as a member?

    Yes, but you need not be a professional. If you are comfortable with clay, have taken a few classes and want to practice and improve your skills, BCi is a perfect option. You will gain more knowledge and experience from our members through the communal support system, and Classes we offer.

  • Do you have openings for volunteers, work exchange, or interns?

    Yes! We invite those with experience or the desire to learn the opportunity to do work in exchange for time in the studio. We will work this out with you on a case by case basis depending on the needs at hand and your skill level and time commitment.   • Do you have pottery tools available for sale?

    Yes, we have new tool kits available for purchase as well as a limited amount of new and used tools available at a discounted price.

  • What sort of clay is being used?

    Our members use a wide range of clay bodies, everything from low fire earthenware up to cone 6 and10 stoneware and porcelain. Members can purchase an all purpose white stoneware from us, but most choose to order from one of our suppliers once they figure out what clay body best serves their needs. Students are required to purchase our warm off white cone 4-6 raku body. Low fire bodies are required to be grey to prevent low/high body accidental mixes.

  • What kind of glazes are available?

    BCi staff mixes glazes on site. All studio glazes are fired to cone 5-6 oxidation and are food safe, microwave safe.

  • I’m worried about lead, is it in any of the materials at the studio?

    Absolutely not — all of our materials are certified non-toxic and confirm to ASTM D-4236.

  • Are there any other safety issues when working with clay?

    Clay is an inherently safe material in it’s working or wet state. The only time it becomes potentially hazardous is when it creates dust and one is exposed to this over a long period of time. Our staff at Brooklyn Clay are diligent about sweeping, mopping and cleaning shelves on a regular basis in order to minimize the dust factor.

  • Is there finished pottery available for sale?

    Yes! Brooklyn Clay Gallery is fully stocked with professionally crafted ceramics of all varieties. A constant flow of new work by our members is always on display, as well as works by those showing in our current exhibits.

  • What sort of kilns do you have?

    We have all multi-sided kilns.

    One 9.9 cubic foot kiln up to cone 5,

    One 7 cubic foot kiln up to cone 9, a small 1.4 cu.ft. up to cone 10, and a small test kilns that fires up to cone 10.

  • How long is pottery stored after classes?

    We hold on to pieces up to 3 months for one-time pieces. 0ne (1) month after 12 week classes and workshops.

  • Where do student purchase clay?

    Each student will purchase a 10 lb. bag of clay at the beginning of the first class from $2.75 to $3.80 - $5.00 per pound, which covers the cost of one bisque and ONE glaze firing, also includes the house glazes. When students need more clay after that, they can purchase it at any time from us.

  • Does the studio recycle clay?

    Yes, our wonderful staff recycles any trimmings or excess clay that you don’t want.  Any clay you wish to use again yourself you must recycle yourself, which we will teach you (it’s not hard!).

  • How long are the class sessions?

    Most sessions run for 12 weeks /semester.

  • Can I sign up for a class in the middle of a session?

    Although we prefer you to register and begin with each new semester, we allow people to sign up for class at any time during a session as long as the class is not full.  Each situation will be assessed on a case by case basis to determine pricing and instruction.  Please call us to work something out.

  • When’s the next session starting?

    Most sessions run for 12 weeks, check the ‘Home or Menu’ under “Classes/12 week classes” for up to date information.

  • How do I register for classes?

    Register online for adult classes, special events for children and family or workshops by visiting individual class links

    Full payment due before first class. Confirmation is sent after payment is received.

    Clay must be purchased from Brooklyn Clay industries supply store, where you may also purchase tools the day of your first class. Prices and availability are subject to change. BCi reserves the right to cancel open studio times for special events.

  • Does Brooklyn Clay offer gift certificates?

    Yes. Check the ‘Home /Shop’ pages.

  • How long is each class?

    All classes are 2 hours long.

  • What’s the Open Studio time all about?

    *Open studio time is FREE to 12 week registered students and associate members to come to the studio and practice their skills outside of class. They working on their own without an instructor available or assigned. $15.00 per hour or less.  *May be preempted for special events from time to time.

  • What is your Class Refund and Rescheduling Policy?

    All refund requests must be made in writing to info@brooklynclayindustries.com

    All refunds are dependent on cancellation time relative to the event or item purchased. Policy may vary according to product sold.

    No refunds on pottery sold or shipped.

    Workshops refund policy:

    Cancel workshops more than 14 days before workshop begins: full refund less a $20 processing fee.

    Cancel 10 days or less before workshop begins: tuition credit less a $50 handling fee.

    12 week classes:

    Cancel more than 14 days before start date of the first class: Full refund less a $20 processing fee.

    Cancel 7 days before class start date: Tuition fee less a $150.00. Cancel on or after first class: Tuition credit for 50% of class fee. No refunds after second class. No refunds for missed classes.

    One-time class cancellation, rescheduling and refund policy:

    a) Cancellations for one-time classes 72 hours or more before your scheduled class.

    b) A $15.00 fee is charged for 1 ticket and $25.00 to tickets for 2 if the class is cancelled under 72 hours.

    c) No Refunds under 72 hours.

    d) Non-attendance to a scheduled class without previously requesting rescheduling, redeems the tickets.

    e) Guests must reschedule if more than 20-25 minutes late for a one-time class. The late cancellation fee above will apply before rescheduling.

    f) Please note a class can only be rescheduled once.

    g) No refunds after class has been rescheduled or credited.

    h) Expired discounted vouchers will retain their dollar value and can be used by paying the difference to register for a class.

    i) Classes are subject to cancellation or postponement if they do not fill sufficiently.

     

    Refund policy for Gift Certificates

    TERMS AND CONDITIONS ARE APPLIED TO GIFT CERTIFICATES/GIFT CARDS:
    Gift certificates/cards expire in exactly five (5) years after purchase and are fully refundable if purchased from our store or website. Fees may be accessed if it has remained dormant or unused after twenty four (24) months. There are no fees charged for replacement if lost, misplaced or accidentally destroyed.     GIFT CERTIFICATES can be redeemed online using the redemption code on the gift certificate to purchase any items or services listed on our website or a printed certificate can be used at our studio directly. If no code is available email BCi to register or use.

    No refunds on firing fees after pottery has been fired whether pieces survived the firing process or not.  

    Membership fees and refund policy

    Membership fees are not refundable.

    1-2 Month Minimum Membership Commitment for BCi open studio hours potters.

    3 Month minimum commitment for 24 Hours memberships.

    There is no refund available after the month has started.

    1 Month Security Deposit will be collected at registration.

    Shelf location and size are subject to change.

    Open Studio Hours are subject to change and the studio may close for major holidays or for reorganization and a major cleaning in between 12 week class sessions.

    Work produced and left to be fired will remain in the studio for no longer than two months.

    4-Week Rule Regarding Finished Work:

    4 weeks after class session ends, after firings are completed, all finished work will be donated to the charity pot sale or thrown out.

  • How to register?

  • What form of payments are accepted?

    Cash, Venmo, Cashapp, and PayPal. No credit cards are accepted.

  • Can my One-time pieces be shipped to me if I can’t pick up?

    Yes! For the Tri-state area (NY,NJ, CT) we can mail 1 piece @ $15.00 and 2 pieces @ $25.00 via the USPS. For other states please inquire via email, Contact us.

  • What if I have a discount voucher.

    To use a redemption code for payment or discount, look for the voucher code check box at check out, enter redemption code and proceed.

  • When can I come visit the studio, drop off work to be fired, or use Open Studio Time?

    Please refer to our business hours and open studio subject to changes due to the pandemic. It’s good to call ahead to confirm access.

    All programs and open studio time are subject to change or cancellad.

  • Can I work in the studio without taking classes?

    Yes. If you’re experienced enough to work on your own, you’re welcome to join us during our open studio hours. Open studio is $15.00 per hour or any fraction thereof.

  • Can I fire work at BCi if I am not a member?

    Yes, outsider artists can fire their work at BCi for cents/cubic inch which covers bisque and glaze firing or rent full kiln load. Find Kiln load prices here. (Create link to firing services)

    And we strongly recommend that you purchase your cone 6 clay from BCi studio which will insure you can also use our glazes. You must provide proof of purchase and exact cone reference for the clay and the glazes you intend to use. Firing fees must be paid when work is delivered.   • When can I pickup my fired work?

    Please call after 7-10 days after drop off to confirm pieces are ready. Rushed firing service (48-72 hours turn around per firing) is available for 18 cents per cubic inch for bisque and glaze firing.

  • How often do you fire kilns?

    Every mid week, alternating bisque and glaze. 

  • How much is firing deposit?

    Members and registered students using outside clay must pay a firing deposit of $25.00 and must measure or have their pieces measured by an assistant before placing for firing.

    No refund is available for firing deposits of $25.00

  • Private /Master Classes Cancellation Policy?

    No refund. 3 months valid credit if cancellation is made in writing to Brooklyn Clay industries at least 24 hours prior to the class. Use contact us link in menu.

    Please note, a class can only be rescheduled once.

  • 12 Week Class Sessions Cancellation and Refund Policy?

    Cancel more than 14 days before start date of the first class: Full refund less a $20 processing fee.

    A $150.00 non-refundable deposit is required to register and hold a spot in a class. Balance will be refunded for cancellations made in writing, no later than 7 days prior to the start of the class session. No refund available thereafter.

    Note : Classes are subject to change or cancellation if they do not fill sufficiently.

    Class make up policy after missed classes : There is one make up class available for the wheel throwing class at the end of the session for those who missed a class or more. Notifications of absence is necessary.
